The New Beginning

The bird-cage plant is a desert plant that regenerates even after it is dead. It lives among the sand dunes, deriving moisture from the occasional morning dew. But as the sand in the dunes gets blown away, its roots get exposed and without protection from the intense sunlight, the plant dies. The roots shrivel and the stems that radiate from the centre, curl upwards making the plant appear like a spherical cage.
As the plant is no longer anchored to the ground, it gets blown away by the wind for days together and comes to rest when calmer conditions prevail. Though the plant is
shrivelled and dead, its seed-bearing pods survive. The intense desert heat splits open the pods, and a large number of seeds spill out to germinate into new plants.
